Re: "City taxi commission balks at lottery for 100 new plates," The Journal, Jan. 21.
It has always been that a plate lottery is only for Edmonton cabbies who are without plates and who have been driving rented city cabs. It's not for every taxi driver in Alberta.
Edmonton has the highest taxi owner-operator-to-renter ratios in Canada. That's why we have the best taxi service in North America. Toronto has new bylaws to en-courage more owner-operators.
Fret not, Coun. Amarjeet Sohi. Continued deadheading won't be a problem. Ever since 2006, when council allowed the airport to give our taxi airport business to another city, Edmonton cabbies have been far too patient.
The taxi bylaws only apply within city limits. If another city unjustly gets our airport business again you could see Edmonton cabbies charging whatever they want for the one-way airport trip.
